John Victor 'Rhino' Edwards

Judie Tzuke

John got the job throughMike Paxman, who, having seen him playing in the Sunday Band, approached him at a party afterwards, just afterTzuke andPaxman had been given the money by Elton John'sRocket Records to put a band together.Mike gave John his number and told him, 'If you can remember it, you got the gig.' The next day John rang andMike, true to his word put him in the band.Jeff Rich followed after answering an advert inMelody Maker, more than a little shocked when John, who he had met whilst playing for Screaming Lord Sutch, answered the phone to him.
During his seven years with rock divaJudie, Rhino unleashed his innovative basslines for the world to enjoy, he wrote a song called '
The Flesh is Weak' with the band for her 'I am the Phoenix' album, and sang backing vocals on the live album 'Roadnoise' recorded around the time of his 100th gig with the outfit - and all thanks to a meeting withMike Paxman, 2 years previously.

I am the Phoenix

During his time withJudie,John played his largest concert ever, to 450,000 billies atMadison Square Gardens, as they supported their record label-ownerElton John, and also earned his bizarre, but fitting, nickname - although he is the international man of mystery as to why he became known as 'Rhino'.
This tour also brought about a reunion with Elton's drummerCharlie Morgan, as did the 1981/2 tours, whereMorgan was the drummer in Judie's backing band, replacingJeff. WhenCharlie left,Matthew Letley was recommended and has since aspired to join Status Quo in the drum throne. It was also whilst working with theTzukeband that he earned his nickname...
The later,John Edwards[bass],Jeff Rich /Charlie Morgan[drums],Mike Paxman[guitar],Bob Noble[keyboards],Paul Muggleton[guitar], backing group lineup released 5 studio albums [plusRoadnoise], and these include some of the strongest material from Judie's back-catalogue.
Most recently John has contributed his bass skills to Judie's brand-new studio album 'Queen Secret Keeper' released on September 3rd 2001, he plays on a track called 'Lion', which discusses 'this imaginary thing that is suppose to make us stronger'.

From the RhinoSite Archives

The Diva's Diva, Judie has had a career spanning more than 20 years, albeit without most of the UK noticing - a fact every last one of her dedicated fan-base still cannot understand.
Despite her lack of nationwide publicity Judie can boast a back-catalogue to rival most and her own place  in power-ballad history with the beautiful  UK #16 hit, Stay With Me 'til Dawn
more recently covered by dance act Lucid. In fact many of Judie's songs are currently being revived by fast-movers in the dance industry to exciting success. And Mike Paxman not only co-writes most of her older material, he also sing backing vocals and plays guitars.
Judie herself is still writing, recording and releasing for her own label Big Moon Records which she runs from her Surrey home with partner, producer and ex-guitarist Paul Muggleton a  long-time Rhino cohort. Her brilliant website is at
www.tzuke.com and is run by the omnipresent Mike Paxman. From it almost all of her album back-catalogue is available - including all the discs with John resplendent in the band's engine room - as well as her latest work with the original albums coming back to the fold as I write.

Nothing beats a good live album, and that's exactly what RoadNoise is. Billed as the 'Official Bootleg' of the 1982  Hammersmith and Glastonbury gigs, it includes Rhino on  backing vocals as well as bass for the whole set, as well as celebrating, just before Stay With Me, his 100th gig with the lineup. A rippng album full of Judie's finest songwriting moments and some outstanding Rhino bass-tricks including one of his infamous solos, during Kateria Island , along with a haunting guitar piece from Pax. A full priced double CD this, though, retailing at around 15 UKP, and the only place I have so far found it is Andy's Records. Nonetheless, well worth the effort to get hold of.
The finest Judie compilation I have come across is the Spectrum/Karussell budget CDStay With me 'til Dawn . Although only tracks 9 -16 feature Mr. Edwards it is truly
an outstanding example of some of her finest moments such as Sports Car and Bring the Rain.
